Film Review: If I Stay
Saturday, 28 February 2015
Wow! Where do I begin? When this film was released in the cinema I'd heard a lot of good reviews, but hadn't really spent the time to research into what it was. I got The Fault in Our Stars DVD for Christmas and as I was skipping through the trailers before it started one came up that caught my eye, and I stood in the middle of my living room fixed to the TV until it ended. I instantly went and ordered the DVD so I could watch it. I'm so pleased I did.
The film follows Mia, a high school girl with an amazing musical talent. She meets Adam, a high school senior with a promising music career ahead of him, and they fall into an amazing relationship. Before you get the chance to learn much about Mia's life, family, and relationship, there's a serious car crash which Mia and her family are involved in.
The story follows Mia in the aftermath of the crash. She's stuck in limbo as she watches her family being taken to the hospital, fighting for their lives, debating whether she should stay on Earth or move into the light. As it progresses you get to learn a lot more about Mia, her life, her relationships, and how everyone around her feels at the thought of loosing her.
The cast is perfect for this film. Mia and Adam have amazing chemistry, and their lives come across as so ordinary and normal. Their lives and relationship could be happening to any normal teenager.
I'm struggling to find the words to express how amazing this film is. It is so emotional, I cried throughout, I'm left feeling a bit empty in side, but I would quite happily press play on the DVD remote and watch it all over again.
It is, without a doubt, one of the best films I ever seen.

Post Exam Shopping Haul
Thursday, 26 February 2015
To celebrate passing my latest CIMA exam I took myself on a little trip around town and decided to treat myself to a few new purchases.
Shoes - Debenhams £20
These shoes caught my eye with their lovely pattern. My mum described it as animal print, I thought of it more as an aztec pattern. Either way, they look lovely. I'm hoping they'll be comfortable too.
Bare Foot Lotion and Cream - £3 each
I love love love love these products. They smell gorgeous! After only a few uses I can definitely see the benefit of these. Hoping to post a review very soon.
Smashbox Makeup - £17 to £28
After it was pointed out to me that my face was becoming very shiny from my makeup, I've been on the hunt for new makeup, particularly a new foundation, that would stop the shininess. Since reading Dominique's Smashbox Liquid Halo Foundation Review at the weekend, I decided to pay a visit to the Smashbox counter in Boots and see what they had to offer.
From chatting to the helpful assistant and testing out a few different products, I came away with the Liquid Halo Foundation, BB Cream Concealer and Finishing Powder. Lets see how well I get on with these!
MUA Eyeshadow Palette and Bronzer - £1 to £4
I've heard a lot of good things about MUA, and not wanting to spend a lot of money on eyeshadow, I decided it was time to give this brand a go. The palette has a perfect range of light shades that are going to be perfect for every day, or for nights out. The bronzer, was a complete spur of the moment purchase, but for a £1 I can't really go wrong.
I may have gone a little overboard celebrating passing just this one exam....when I'm finally qualified I dread to think how much I'll spend as a celebration.

Happy 1st Birthday!

I can't believe my blog is 1 year old today! What a year it's been. A lot has happened, and a lot has changed in the past 12 months, but I'm proud to say that me and my blog are still together.
When I started my blog, I had no idea of what I wanted my blog to be like when it turned one year old...being honest I didn't think I'd still be here one year on. I've tried blogging in the past and never stuck it out for more than a month or two, so being a year old is a big achievement.
I wanted somewhere to just write down my thoughts and experiences so that someone out there in the world might stumble across them and learn from them. Whether that has happened or not, I don't know, but it has given me a different way to express myself and helped a few people keep up to date on what's happening in my life.
Blogging has helped me learn a lot about myself, but one thing in particularly. I've always known that I'm very self-conscious, and try my hardest not to upset people with the things I do, but I didn't how much I thought about this until I tried to write something I knew the whole world could see. I spent way too much time thinking about what the person reading it might think...I'm even doing it now...this is the third draft of this post you're now reading. This time next year, I don't want to be thinking the same.
For 2015, my blog development plan is to:

Paint the Town Green
The Script
The Script are one of those bands where I just can't help but love all of their songs. This one in particular is a great little tune from their newest album. It's such a party song and makes me really want to be Irish! I can see this being played non stop on St Patrick's Day. I'd love to see them perform this live, because I think it would be such an amazing atmosphere when they did.

Asda Good & Counted Chicken Nacho Bake Review
Monday, 16 February 2015
In an effort to loose weight and keep healthy, I've cut out a lot the processed food from my diet and started making a lot of fresh cooked meals. But some days I just need something quick and easy to cook, so I'm on the hunt for a ready meal that's healthy (as healthy as they can be anyway).
On today's visit to Asda I stumbled across their new Good and Counted range in the fridge section. These caught my eye as they offered something a little bit different to the others around them. I decided to treat myself to the Chicken Nacho Bake with Potato Wedges meal, at the trial price of £2 (£2.68 from the end of the month).

The product claims to be very high in protein, and with less than 3% fat. I'm not an expert on how these macros are calculated, so I can't really comment if that's true or not, but when I put it into My Fitness Pal they flagged it as being high in protein. For someone who struggles to get anywhere near my daily protein target, this meal was a big help. 35g is a lot to get from one meal.
The picture on the front of the packaging makes this meal look really nice, there's large chunks of chicken, with a few wedges, covered in tomato sauce with crispy tortilla's on top. When I cooked it, it looked nothing like that. Yes there were large chunks of chicken and some big wedges, but there were no tortillas and way too much sauce.
The sauce however was tasty, a little bit spicy, but not overwhelming. The potatoes were a bit hard...maybe this was me not cooking it for long enough. The chicken wasn't the best though, it tasted very cheap. But I have had worse tasting meat in ready meals before.
Rating: 6/10 - For a meal thats easy to make, and with good macros this is great, but you do compromise a bit on taste. I've still had worse though.

Recipe: Thai Squash & Pineapple Curry
Monday, 9 February 2015
I wasn't even particularly looking for new recipes to try when I came across this one, but when I saw it I had to try it!
I've only recently discovered butternut squash, and was looking for a chance to try it in something other than just roasted in the oven (even though that's really nice). This curry has a bit of spice to it, and is extremely filling, but it smells amazing while it's cooking and tastes lovely.
It's not something I'd make on a regular basis, but for something a bit different once in a while it's great!
Credit goes to 30 Day Fitness Challenge for this recipe.
Ingredients
1 tbsp Vegetable Oil
1 Onion
4 tsp Thai Red Curry Paste
500g Butternut Squash
200ml Coconut Milk
200ml Vegetable Stock
1 Can Pineapple Chunks
Bunch Coriander Leave, Chopped
240g Basmati Rice
The 30 Day Fitness Challenge recipe also includes green beans, but I'm not a fan of them so I didn't include them.
Recipe serves 4 and will be approximately 500 calories per portion.
Instructions
1. Cut the squash into chunks
2. Pre-make your stock
3. Put a pan of water on to boil for the rice
3. Heat the oil in a pan, and fry the onion for 5 minutes until soft.
4. Stir in the red curry paste, add the squash, coconut milk and stock
5. Simmer the curry for 15-20 mins. It'll smell amazing while it's simmering away.
6. Once the pan has boiled, at the rice and cook for 12 mins
6. Add the pineapple and coriander, cooking for a few mins just to heat the pineapple through
7. Serve the curry and rice and sprinkle with coriander leaves
Lessons I learnt making this recipe:
Butternut squash is a pain to cut, peel and slice! Be careful when doing so.
I don't own a can opener, but it is possible to use a knife as a can opener!...although to make life easier I should just go and buy one.
If you're going to be adventurous with your cooking, possibly best not to do it on a work night if you're planning on going to the gym also. Sitting down at 9:30pm to eat isn't ideal.

Lessons Learnt From Buying My First Home
Thursday, 5 February 2015
In 2013, I made the biggest decision of my life, deciding to buy my home. I found the one for me, placed my deposit and 13 months later (that's a different story) finally picked up my keys! I've now been living in my own home for 2 months, and I'm pleased to say I made the right choice. But here's what I learnt over my journey of buying a house.
Lesson 1 - What you think you can afford, probably isn't what you can afford
When I signed my contract for my Graduate job I thought I was earning a pretty good salary. I had a decent monthly income, very little monthly payments going out of my bank. I thought I'd be able to afford homes in the region of about £130k - £140k.
I started my search within this price range and found some amazing houses that I'd have loved to own. My parents convinced me to do some research online and get some quotes for mortgages. It was at this point I realised no one would give me enough to buy the houses I'd been looking at unless I had a massive deposit, which I didn't. To get a house I was definitely going to have to lower my price range.
Before you start looking speak to a financial advisor or do some research yourself to see what the banks will be willing to learn you, what deposit you'd need and whether you can afford it.
Lesson 2 - Learn to compromise
Decide what you want from your new home. Do you want a flat? Or a house? In the city? Or in the Countryside? Write out a list and start your search. What you'll find is you're going to have to compromise somewhere. Either in size, location, number of bedrooms, garden etc. Decide what is the most important thing to you, what you can't live without, and narrow down your search.
I wanted a 2 or 3 bed house, with a decent size garden, off road parking, just on the outskirts of Newcastle, within close distance to a good bus route/metro station to get into town and easy access to the motorways to get to work. When I saw what I could afford, I realised this wasn't going to happen. I had two choices; move further out of the city centre (into the next county to be exact) to get the house I wanted, or get the location I wanted but live in a flat instead. Although I considered option 1 for a while, I ended up with option 2. Location was much more important to me than the house was.
If you can find the perfect house for you without having to compromise at all, you're very lucky! But, if not, don't be afraid to compromise.
Lesson 3 - No one can make the decision for you
I'm rubbish at making decisions so I tend to avoid them as much as possible. I took my parents with me house hunting and I kept asking them 'what do you think I should do?'. Their response was 'We're not the ones that will be living here, you will'. As annoying as it was at the time when you just want someone to tell you what to do, they're right in what they're saying.
You're buying your home, so the decision as to what to buy is yours. Don't go house hunting alone, but remember the people you take with you are there to advise you only on things you may not have spotted/considered. They can't make the decision for you.
Lesson 4 - It's a lot more expensive than you think it is
Buying a home isn't cheap, and there's a lot more to pay for than you might first think of. The bulk of your money will go on the deposit, typically 10% of the sale value, but before you've even got the keys you have to pay for solicitor's fees, stamp duty (if applicable), mortgage application fees, financial advisor fees, your mortgage provider's solicitors fees, property surveys, the list can go on. Make sure you have enough behind you to cover all of this as you'll need to pay it all in advance.
Then when you eventually get your keys there's all the furniture to buy, insurance to sort out, council tax to pay, bills to pay, curtains to buy, phone lines to install (if they're not already there), and if you're buying a new build you've got things like carpets, tiles, curtain poles, light fittings to purchase just to allow you to sleep there.
Make sure you're aware of everything you're going to need to pay and keep track of how much you're spending to make sure you have enough to cover the things you need.
Lesson 5 - Delays happen
Delays. Delays. Delays. The amount of delays I went through in my purchase were unbelievable, but I'm not here to rant about them (as much as I would like to). When you make the decision to purchase you'll be given an estimated date for completion, but take this with a pinch of salt as it is just an estimation.
If you're buying a preowned home you'll have other people's moving schedules to deal with. The person you're buying off my not find a home to move into and until they do, they probably won't agree to move. That could be a long delay depending on how long it takes to find somewhere.
If you're buying a new build home, no matter how far through the build they are, there's always things like the weather, a shortage of parts, unexpected problems or anything to arise. Everyone puts delays onto the completion date. I had delays due to the roof not being signed off my the building authorities, to a shortage of staff to complete the job, to the carpet fitters not being available on the day the builders wanted them, to last minute changes in plans stopping us from completing. Be very careful what you sign and agree to regarding dates for a new build.
And then in either situation, you have the delays with solicitors. I may have only bought one home for me, but I've moved house four times with my parents and in each case we had numerous delays with solicitors not doing what they should have done and by when. From my experiences, if you don't keep on top of them and in communication with them, things aren't going to progress.
Lesson 6 - Enjoy your new home
The day you get the keys is a great day. You finally get something to show for the fact you've spent a fortune on. I spent the first half an hour in my home just wandering round the empty living room in circles talking really excitedly down the phone to my parents. I loved it, and it didn't have anything in it.
Now I've been in two months, I'm settled and I love being here. I definitely made the right decision, and I enjoy every minute I'm in my flat. I look forward to coming home from work and don't mind spending time at home on the weekends. It's a big decision but it's definitely worth it. I hope you enjoy yours too!

1. Back to College!
I've now started my sixth CIMA module and have my exam in 22 days. Very scary thought!
2. Late Christmas Presents from Omar
Although he'd already got me a Christmas, Omar decided to surprise me with a lovely pair of silver heart stud earrings. A lovely gift from a lovely boyfriend.
3. Finished Book 1 of my 2015 Reading Challenge
I finished My Side of Life, by Shane Filan. The first book of my 2015 challenge. Check out my review here
4. Used my cute little egg cup and spoon for the first time
Chris bought me these egg cups as a house warming gift ages ago, and I finally got round to making soft boiled eggs. The cups and spoons are so cute.
5. Back to the Gym and Dance
It's time to get fit and healthy. I've gone back to the gym, I'm watching what I eat and so far I've lost just under 5 lbs. Good start to the year.
